The Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation is sponsoring a tour of a little known Paul Rudolph designed house in Venice, FL, June 20, from 5:30 to 7:30pm. The waterfront house is being showcased as part of the Alliance's program of “Best Opportunities in Historic Preservation” which brings to the attention of the public important buildings of architectural and historical significance.
Though the Taylor House of 1955-56 is not as well known as some of Rudolph's other works, it is no less important, for it is a seminal work by the architect who went on to achieve fame for his work both as an important educator and an internationally recognized architect. It was Rudolph's Florida houses that attracted the attention of the architectural community in the 1950s through the publication of their designs in many books and periodicals that gave him that notoriety that warranted his leaving Sarasota to become the dean of the School of Architecture at Yale University as well as to developing an architectural practice that led to important commissions around the world.
Joe King, who co-authored the book "Paul Rudolph: The Florida Houses", will talk about Paul Rudolph that afternoon, and designer Wilson Stiles will discuss the original interiors of the Taylor House.
The Taylor House is located at 324 Tarpon St. in Venice. Admission is free for Alliance members and for those who join at the door and $5 for all others. Refreshments will be served.
