If you happen to be new to Sarasota and have not seen this annual exhibit, get ready for a sensory experience! Come see the walls of Selby’s Museum of Botany & the Arts covered with hundreds of hand-carved and painted wooden masks created by master carvers from the southwestern indigenous village of Boruca, Costa Rica.
Join us for the Exhibit Opening Reception on Thursday, March 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Museum of Botany and the Arts. For reservations please email mshelley@selby.org, or call 941-366-5731, Ext. 239.
Take advantage of an opportunity to see the Borucans demonstrate their carving and painting artistry during four “Meet the Artists” sessions in the Museum of Botany and the Arts on Saturdays and Sundays, March 10, 11, 17 & 18 from 1-3 p.m. A Spanish interpreter will be available to help translate your questions.
The Road to Boruca and Beyond Noon Lecture is a free lecture on Wednesday, March 14, noon to 1 p.m. in Selby's Great Room on the Bay. Join Marilynn and C.J. Shelley as they unveil stories of their adventures in the native village of Boruca and see images of colorful animals and verdant forests. Learn more about the artists behind the masks on display in the Mansion and hear fascinating stories of their journey.
Exhibit continues through April 20.
