Casey Key - Sarasota's hidden enclave

The narrow, 8-mile long island of Casey Key is one of Sarasota's hidden gems, an isolated and exclusive enclave just off the sleepy mainland town of Nokomis. There are only around 400 residents, no massive hotels and little else besides a single road and two public beaches. Casey Key might not have as much going on as some of Sarasota's more lively islands, but for many people that's part of its charm.

Casey Key's small expanse of land is home to some of the most spectacular houses in Sarasota, several owned by bona fide celebrities -- like author Stephen King -- who call the island home for part of the year. Drive south down Casey Key Road from the Blackburn Point Bridge through a canopy of old-growth palm, pine and oak trees and you'll catch glimpses of everything from massive modern mansions to modest old beach homes, all directly on the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Mexico. 

Eventually you'll reach Nokomis Beach, a long expanse of sand on the east and west sides of the island complete with boat launch facilities, a boardwalk and a snack bar. Watch the sun dip into the water on Wednesday or Saturday night and you'll catch a drum circle that will have your feet tapping out a rhythm in moments.

At the south tip of Casey Key is the popular North Jetty Park. Relax on the fine white sand covering the park's gulf-side beach, then take a short walk east to watch the pod of dolphins that frequently cavort in the bay waters. This is also a famed spot for amateur anglers, who usually keep a closer eye on the hungry seagulls hovering nearby than the playful dolphins.

After a day spent absorbing Casey Key's warm sun and scenic views, you'll want to refill your tanks without losing the relaxing island vibe. Luckily, there are several waterfront restaurants just on the other side of the island's two bridges where you can toss back a drink and nosh on seafood that could very well have been pulled from the Gulf of Mexico just hours before.
