Take Me Out to the Ball Game !
What better way to enjoy the sun-sational spring weather here in Sarasota than being outdoors and enjoying one of the nation's favorite pastimes? 2013 marked the fourth consecutive spring training season for the Baltimore Orioles in Sarasota, and the third year in the newly renovated Ed Smith Stadium, also known as "Birdland South."
Whether you're an avid baseball enthusiast or a first-time fan, Ed Smith Stadium has everything to please game-goers, from a full scale retail shop and a climate-controlled cafe to beer stands and an array of edibles in between. The team mascot, the Oriole Bird, is often seen wandering the walkways before games for photo opportunities or feathery handshakes. In addition, time permitting, players and coaches may sign autographs from the time the gates open until 45 minutes prior to the start of each game.
You'll also find seating to accommodate nearly 9,000 fans, complete with sections including shade awnings and special areas that can be reserved for pregame picnics. Picnic areas are perfect for parties of 20 to 200 and you'll enjoy a traditional ballpark menu and a unique view of the action. Pricing starts at $40 per guest. For more information, or to make a reservation, call (941) 893-6300.
Game prices range from $8 for standing room only to $32 for premium infield box seats at prime games. For all price information and details, visit www.orioles.com.
Ed Smith Stadium is located at 2700 12th St., Sarasota.
Special Events
In addition to the regular spring training schedule, the Orioles hold a number of special events that support the community and their fans. Whether you are young or just young at heart, there's something here to make any fan feel special.
During one game, kids 14 and under get to run the bases. Another marks Youth Baseball Day, where a pregame parade shows off youth baseball players as they march, in uniform, around the field. The Orioles also have a soft spot for the young at heart. After one game, fans 60 and over take to the base-paths and walk or run at their own pace.
If you're celebrating a special event or know someone who is, fans may recognize a special person's birthday or anniversary on the new state-of-the-art HD video board at Ed Smith Stadium by making arrangements at least 24 hours in advance of a game. Fans can call (941) 893-6300 or visit the Fan Assistance Center to make advance reservations, which must be accompanied by a minimum $10 donation to the Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation.
The Extra Inning
In addition to a great spring training lineup, Sarasota offers warm weather, relaxation, great food, cultural events, beautiful sunsets and Siesta Key Beach, the Best Beach in the Nation, according to the famous "Dr. Beach" rankings. So, if you need a sun-filled escape or just miss the smell of warm roasted peanuts and want to hear the shouts of concessioners calling, "Popcorn. Get your popcorn," then come for a visit. You’ll be glad you did.
